Marijuana being sold in Site-tway (Sittwe) University canteens
January 5, 2010
Ko Khine Mrat Lunn of the Site-tway University Students’ Union (SUSU) has told the Arakan Review that “university students from Site-tway University are buying Marijuana cheaply from canteens in the university compound and using it with a local brand of cigarettes called “Three Lions”.
“It’s unbelievable that students are buying and using marijuana in the university compound. They know it affects them physically and morally. They smoke it in unoccupied university rooms such as T1 and T2 Room. They also use it in Buildings 7 and 1. Students also use the drug at the maize farm nearby, and some have even dared to smoke it in the classroom.”
He also commented on the wide availability of marijuana at the university, pointing out that “It was not like that before. I don’t know why they started selling the drug. It is surprising that people are dealing drugs while the special branch (SB) of the military, as well as military affairs security known as sa-ah-pha are always on the campus. The students use the drug with the local cigarettes called “Three Lions” which are also known locally as “Shwe Bat”. They call inhaling the drug “riding the boat”.”
He noted that there have been some cases of students vomiting and passing out inside the classroom from marijuana use. “We want the authorities to prevent the shops from selling the drugs. Students have said they use it for fun, but they will definitely get addicted.”
The drug is thought to be available at Maw Late Junction, Kyaung Tark Lan, Kone Dan (in front of Narzi market), Site-tway University Compound, and other unknown places; people can now buy it easily at any time, from several locations.
